Lawn Care - Other Services

Lucas Lawncare provides five primary supplemental services for homeowners with established lawns. We provide the majority of the services to customers enrolled in one of the scheduled lawncare programs. Four specific services, however, are performed on an as-needed basis, after consultation with the homeowner. Each of these services may be contracted, whether or not the homeowner receives any other services from Lucas lawncare.

LIME -- An application of powdered or pelletized limestone is an annual or bi-annual ritual for the lawn of many homeowners in New England. Its sole purpose is to "sweeten" the soil: that is, to make slightly less acidic, and slightly more alkaline. Most soil in Maine is especially acidic because pine needles are quite acidic. If the ph factor of the lawn is moved from either extreme closer to the mid-range, the grass will utilize its internal growing resources more fully. Lucas Lawncare applies only pelletized lime (because it reaches the soil more quickly), and recommends annual lime application for most lawns, either at the beginning or at the end of the growing season.

CORE AERATION is the standard treatment for lawns which are compromised by a thick and matted layer of thatch (dead lawn clippings, surface roots, etc). The treatment by machine pulls dime-sized plugs of thatch, sod and soil from the ground at measured intervals. This through layers of thatch on your lawn, allowing moisture to get to the root system in larger quantities and more quickly. Furthermore, the "plugs" of soil and grass which are left on the lawn dissolve in a short time (after rain or watering) and return needed nutrients to the soil. Lawns particularly susceptible to thatching problems are often given a core aeration treatment as often as every other year, either in spring or fall.

AERATION AND OVERSEED is a combination of services in which the aeration described is followed by the immediate application of seed. Seed sown at this time gets particularly good soil-to-seed contact, and is one of the more successful methods of thickening an established lawn. This procedure is usually done in the spring or fall.
